so, yesterday i decided to embark on what i'm calling the tulsa death march. it may not seem so 'death marchy' to some, but for me, used to driving everywhere i want to go, it was nothing at which to sneeze.
i got it in my mind that i wanted to go to barnes and noble to use a gift card kenny gave me for giftmas. on a previous trip, i was looking through the folk lore/myth section and noticed the arabian nights and considered it much at the time but wasn't sure if i should get it. not knowing much more than the next man about the tales, i finally resolved to pick it up upon my next visit to ye olde bookshoppe.
and so began my Great Walk.
i live roughly one 0.5 miles from 21st and memorial, and barnes and noble is roughly at 41st and yale. anyone who knows tulsa knows of its great grid system of main thoroughfares and how the main intersections are all one mile apart. from 21st and memorial to 41st and yale, one must go two miles west and two miles south. add my 0.5 miles to this to get to 21st and mem. and you've got 4.5 miles each way if you take the surface streets all the way. but not take some shortcuts is for chumps, so i shortened the distance by perhaps a half a mile each way. total roundtrip distance was approx. 8 miles. i think i averaged about 3-4 miles per hour, but since i stopped and sat around at BN for a while and then stopped on the way home at thai siam for some din-din, it took longer.
upon hearing that i did this, some of my friends remarked that i was insane for walking that distance just for a book. my response has been, so far, that i didn't want to drive to save on fuel, that i wanted some sunlight (as working at night deprives me of it most of the time), that i wanted some exercise/fresh air, that i'm preparing for all the walking that i'm about to do when i go on my two-week trip to marburg, germany and istanbul, turkey. this has helped to shut most people up. and if someone remarks upon it again, i'll add to the above list of reasons for the walk that the book is an excellent one and worth an even greater distance in the future. i'm reminded of the story of abraham lincoln supposedly walking some 20 miles to get a book once (n0t sure if that's the distance in the story).
it's been a day since the walk and my feet only ache a bit, enough to be completely negligible. i went on webmd.com to see how many calories i can expect to have burned, and the number was between 700-1000, depending on how vigorous the walking was. does walking into the wind for half of the trip count for extra cals burned? i'm sure it does.
well, that's it for this crappy post. for me, it's back to the arabian nights. good shit these tales are.

Oh, the weather outside is fucking cold
fuck and a half, it's cold right now. i'm at work (note, most of these posts will probably originate while i'm working), walking around outside, and it is freezing. somewhere in the area of 17-20°F but weather.com is saying it feels like 8 or 9°F.
not much to report in the way of daily news. i'll be off work for the next three days, but i'll be busy for at least one of those days, if not all three. tomorrow, which is really just later today after i've slept, i'll have a few errands to take care of, such as going to my friend sage's house to help cut up a tree that fell into her yard during ICE STORM 2007, December model. it's a lot of work but i'll be getting paid and it's pretty good exercise, what with all the ax swinging i'll be doing.
and speaking of exercise, one of my NY resolutions is to do more of that. i realize that most resolutions never get carried out, but i think it has to do with unrealistic goals being set. if one states that one would like to lose weight, that's all fine and dandy. go for it. i mean, can you sit around and just think «lose weight» and it happens? no. you have to do actual things to make it happen. these include consciously choosing to eat healthier and exercise. it takes discipline and willpower.
therefore, i submit to you, reader of this, my new year's resolutions ver. 2008. all of these are exactly as i wrote them on NYE.

Things I Won't Do Most Likely in 2008
eat better; ditch the fast food... except Umberto's.
drink more water; soda is a reward, nothing more. you have a nalgene bottle. use it.
complete a minimum of 20 push ups a day, adding 2 every 2 weeks on mondays.
complete a minimum of 20 crunches a day, adding five every two weeks on mondays.
walk more, like to mom's hous. this will turn into jogging eventually.
SOCIALIZE!!!
save money. this means going to the grocery store to buy groceries. it's cheaper than eating out all the time.
plan for awesome trips like the one you're taking in february.
record some flippin' music, cuz you've got some dynamite material.
write more poetry, short stories.
continue to read. less television.... Colbert Report and such are fine.
you bought an ax. use it! kinda like the nalgene bottle.
be timely in returning borrowed items.
you see. take the exercising section above. i didn't set some arbitrary goal for weight loss. i resolved to do what i know i am capable of doing every day. will i actually commit to it? i don't know. so far, so good. i figure that if i make some efforts to tie some resolutions together, i'll have more of a chance of making them happen. zB, eating better, no fast food, and saving money go hand in hand. if i buy stuff from the store, i can make my own food, make enough to last for days, for about the same cost as one crappy meal from mcdonalds. and it will most likely be healthier. you starting to see how this is all wrapping up into a neat little package, dear reader? hope so.
well, i hope this has been enlightening. that's all for now, but tune in next week, same bat time, same bat channel for another installment of GO GO LAWNMOWER!!!
and maybe i'll use capitals and indent on my next post. not!

Welcome
I won't bore you with too many details, but I think we must start on the proper foot here. Basically, this blog is being written as an outlet for things I might not talk to my friends and family about, and also to keep a few friends who I don't see all that often (ever, really) up to speed with what's going on.
To begin, I live with my best friend, Kenny (Ken4) in an apartment over a detached garage at his Gma's. I work for a small private investigation/security company- so much funnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn....................ugh. Don't get me wrong, I live my bosses, but sometimes I don't know how long I can keep going before I crack up and lose it. Working at night sucks, basically.
See, now I'm outta things to say for now. I'll try to keep this thing updated on a regular basis. But, then again, I probably won't. You've been informed.
